My Journey at Ambitions Technology Group: From Desktop Support to Director of Innovation
The Early Days: Desktop Support Technician
When I first joined Ambitions Technology Group eight years ago, I started as a desktop support technician. My responsibilities included:
- Troubleshooting hardware and software issues for clients
- Setting up new workstations and peripherals
- Providing remote and on-site technical support
- Maintaining detailed logs of all support tickets and resolutions
During this time, I honed my customer service skills and developed a deep understanding of the diverse needs of our client base.
Expanding Horizons: Server and Network Administration
As I grew more comfortable in my role, I began to seek out new challenges and opportunities to learn. I started to delve into more complex areas of IT:
- Server administration (Windows Server, Linux)
- Email systems (On premise Exchange, Gmail, Office 365)
- Next-generation firewalls (Sonicwall, Fortinet)
- Advanced networking concepts (VLANs, VPNs, SD-WAN)
This period of rapid learning was exhilarating, and I found myself constantly pushing the boundaries of my knowledge.
The PowerShell Revolution: Mastering Automation
Recognizing the power of automation to improve efficiency and reduce human error, I immersed myself in learning PowerShell. Some of my key achievements in this area include:
- Developing scripts for automated monthly server reboots
- Creating a system for status updates via Microsoft Teams
- Streamlining routine maintenance tasks across our client base
- Implementing automated reporting for system health and performance
My passion for automation not only improved our internal processes but also significantly enhanced the service we provided to our clients. Recently, I’ve discovered that AI can help automate portions of the development process. While it’s not a replacement for creativity, it is a very powerful tool that speeds things up. I view it as a force multiplier.
Standardization and Innovation: Redefining Our Approach
As I continued to grow in my role, I identified areas where we could improve our processes:
- Replaced traditional imaging technologies with a fully scripted computer setup process
- Developed a standardized approach that could be easily adapted for different client environments
- Created documentation and training materials to ensure consistent implementation across the team
- Continuously refined and updated the process based on team feedback and changing technologies
This standardization effort significantly reduced setup times and improved consistency across all our client installations.
Leadership and Mentorship: Becoming the Technical Lead
My technical expertise and problem-solving skills led to me becoming the team’s go-to resource for complex issues. However, I approached this role with a mentorship mindset:
- Instead of simply providing answers, I guided team members through the problem-solving process
- Encouraged critical thinking and independent research skills
- Developed internal knowledge bases and documentation to support self-directed learning
- Organized regular team training sessions to share knowledge and discuss emerging technologies
This approach not only helped elevate the skills of the entire team but also fostered a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
Stepping into Management: Director of Innovation
My contributions to the company’s growth and success led to my promotion to “Director of Innovation.” In this role, I took on additional responsibilities:
- Participating in strategic planning sessions with company leadership
- Researching and recommending new technologies and services to offer our clients
- Developing and implementing internal innovation initiatives
- Representing the company at industry conferences and events
I also became heavily involved in shaping our team:
